“If I be waspish, best beware my sting.” ― William Shakespeare, The Taming of the Shrew
Photography Challenge: Backyard Wildlife Up Close and Personal
For this project I wanted to feature one of the gorgeous paper wasps (Polistes Dominula) who have been coming daily to the bee waterer in our back yard.
Our bee waterer is simply an old terra cotta planter saucer with some rocks and water in it which I have mounted on a wall outside. It took a while for word to get about among the fauna, but now our bee waterer is an insect superhighway. I’m always glad to see these beautiful paper wasps stopping by for a drink. They aren’t aggressive, they’re important pollinators, and they hunt mosquitoes.
That is a stunning photograph, Linda Sue.

Thank you so much, John! I got this close-up shot right before she stung me… just kidding! 😉
